Reproduced with npm 10.9: react@18 with react-dom@19 giving ERESOLVE, the legacy-peer-deps workaround, EBADENGINE with and without engine-strict, an E404 package, and semver.satisfies results for caret, tilde, prerelease and x ranges.

npm install fails with ERESOLVE unable to resolve dependency tree, or warns EBADENGINE. Read the error, choose between fixing versions, --legacy-peer-deps and --force, and understand ^ and ~ ranges exactly.
